सत्र की शुरुआत उड़ीसा के भौगोलिक और सांस्कृतिक क्षेत्र के परिचय और सामान्य रूप से धारणा के साथ हुई. बाद में धीरे-धीरे यह मगधी प्राकृत और गीत गोविंदा जैसे मध्ययुगीन ग्रंथों में इसके मूल और इसके विकास में गजपति साम्राज्य जैसी ऐतिहासिक साम्राज्यों की भूमिकाओं की ओर बढ़ गया। इसके बाद भाषा की संरचना पर ध्यान केंद्रित किया गया,जो कि बांग्ला और तेलुगु की तुलना में प्रभावशाली भाषाओं के रूप में है.
